Larry Returns
I must admit that when the original Leisure Suit Larry came out (hmmm, not sure that’s the best phrase to use when talking about a game like this) I thought it was a heap of fun. But having said that, I was about twelve years old at the time and any chance to view some 8-bit pixelated nakedness was welcomed. So when Al Lowe decided to reboot the series via the crowd-funding project Kickstarter, I thought I’d take a look to see how it had transformed over that time.
For those who haven’t heard of Leisure Suit Larry, the game is a point-and-click adventure (the original was a typing adventure) about a Leisure Suit-clad gentleman by the name of Larry Laffer. His goal, much like those teenagers in the American Pie movie, is to be intimate with a member of the opposite sex. Unfortunately, Larry doesn’t have a lot going for him, so the task at hand will be quite hard (double entendre fully intended).
Nostalgia
After loading up Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded, I was greeted with the Age Verification check similar to that of the original. Of course, with the original, kids would have needed to go ask a parent some of the questions or need to go to a library to look up the answers in an encyclopaedia. These days, the internet is all you need if you don’t know the answers so it is somewhat obsolete, but the tribute to the original 1987 version was a nice touch.
The Age Verification Check is not the only throwback to the original. Apart from the story being remarkably similar (well, the goal is the same), much of the visuals look as though they have come straight out of the original. The slot machines for instance, look like they have been pulled straight from the Sierra classic. Although this is as intended (I hope so anyway), the other visuals aren’t up to scratch for a modern remake. Yes, Larry himself has been given a makeover as have the ladies (in close up mode), and the locations and characters are no longer a bunch of pixels that require imagination, but the game looks like it could have been a 1990’s sequel rather than one released in 2013.
This is further enhanced by the animation. Larry moves quite smoothly, but other characters have a sliding style motion to them which just doesn’t look right. The worst culprit though is the lip synching when chatting up close to the ladies. Maybe when they speak in the German or French versions it may look right, but for the English version I played, the lips just open and close and words come out whether they are open or shut. It may seem like a small gripe, but when combined with all the other visual mediocrity, it just seemed like the designers were either lazy or rushed.
Lefty's Bar
Start by opening the door and heading into Lefty's. Sit down on the stool and buy a whiskey (which you will carry around with you). Stand up and head into the passage to the north. Take the rose, and give your whiskey to the drunk in exchange for a television remote. Enter the bathroom and read the graffiti until you get the password 'Ken sent me'. Now sit down for a while, then wipe and get up. Look in the sink to find a ring that you should take. Now head outside and call a taxi - go to the store.
Convenience Store
Pay the cabbie when you arrive, then get out of the cab. Look at the phone to get the phone number 555-6969. Use the phone and dial this number. Now look at your business cards to get the phone number for Sierra (209) 683-6858. Dial this number now. After the phone calls, head into the store and look at the magazines. Take one and head to the store clerk. Buy the magazine, some wine and a condom. Give the wine to a bum that is loitering around outside the store, in exchange for a pocket knife. Read the magazine, then catch a taxi back to Lefty's.
At some point you will notice your breath smells - use your breath spray. If you run out of spray, go to the convenience store and buy some more.

Go inside and knock on the door to the right. Say the password 'Ken sent me' to get inside. Now you need to move the pimp - use the remote to turn on the television, then keep changing the channel until he gets interested. Head upstairs and look at the girl on the bed. Take off your clothes, wear the condom and screw the girl. Remove the condom when you are finished, then open the window. Take the candy, then climb outside. Walk to the left and you fill fall into the trash. Look in the bin, then take the hammer you find. Get out of the trash and head left, then call a cab and head to the casino.
Casino
Buy an apple from the apple guy if you see him out the front of the casino. Head inside and walk through to the back of the casino. Get the card from the ashtray, then head right to find a comedian (if he is not there, head left and right again until he appears). Sit at the unreserved table and watch the show. Now return to the casino and play slots or blackjack until you have $250. Go outside and take a taxi to the disco.
Disco
Show your card to the bouncer to get into the disco. Sit next to the woman, then look at her. Talk to her and ask her to dance. After the dance, sit down, look at her again, then give her the rose, candy and ring. Give her the money she asks for, then head outside and catch a taxi to the wedding chapel.
Wedding Chapel and Casino
Talk to the flasher, then open the door and go inside. Marry Fawn. Now leave the chapel and head west to find the casino again. Go inside and head through to the back. Enter the elevator and press 4 to go up to the 4th floor. Knock on the door with the heart. Go inside and turn on the radio to hear a commercial with a phone number of 555-8039. Go outside and catch a taxi to the convenience store.
Convenience Store
Use the phone, dialing 555-8039 to order some wine to the honeymoon suite. Catch a cab back to the casino again.
Casino
Go inside and up to the honeymoon suite again. Pour the wine and you will eventually end up tied to the bed. Use the knife to cut yourself free, then take the rope before heading down to the casino. Earn $250 again, then go outside and catch a taxi to Lefty's.

If you don't have an apple yet, buy one now. Head up to the 8th floor, and look at the girl behind the counter. Talk to her, then give her the pills. After she leaves, press the button on her desk, then enter the penthouse to the right. Walk around behind the partition and go right, then open the closet on the right of the bedroom. Get the doll, then inflate it and use it (twice). You will automatically chase the doll outside. Look at the girl in the hot tub, then talk to her. Strip off your clothes and look at the girl again. Give her the apple and the game is complete.
